The Vindicator | Jerry Michalsky — Kaci West of Liberty strides of the mound on Saturday morning at home against A&M Consolidated.

It looks like Coach Ken McCarther has lit a fire under those Tarkington Longhorns. They are 6-3 after this weekend’s wins over Splendora, 7-4; Coldspring-Oakhurst, 8-2; Liberty 10-3; and Shepherd, 9-0.

Against Liberty Friday, Longhorn Trace Shirley slugged for two triples. Dee Brandon and Blake Ellington each doubled for the Horns.

The Panthers’ bats were cold until the sixth and final inning of the tournament game. Liberty went into the sixth down 8-0, having gotten just one hit. Longhorns pitcher Dennis Hollingsworth allowed the Panthers only 5 hits for the game, a single in the first by Andrew Williams, and then three base hits and one triple in the sixth, that three-bagger hit by Joe Taylor.

The Horns’ shutout of the Shepherd Pirates on Saturday was hard and fast with Wyatt Meekins on the mound for Tarkington throwing for 7 strikeouts while allowing only 6 hits. Doubles were hit by Trae Deck, Cole McLawchlin and Ellington.

Tarkington scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Shirley was walked to first. Then McLawchlin made second on a line drive to left field. Another walk put Brandon on base, then a double from Deck put Tarkington up 3-0.

Chris Reynolds got a walk with a bruise, and Coltin Bottos got a single to load the bases for the Pirates to force a run, hitting Garrett Lott with a pitch.

Deck singled in the fourth, driving in McLawchlin for Tarkington’s sixth run and Deck’s fourth RBI of the game.

Liberty Lady Panthers

The Liberty Lady Panthers went 4-1 in the softball tournament they hosted this weekend, falling by 1-0 to Santa Fe, but beating Lee, 10-0; Danbury, 3-1; Huntington, 2-1; and A&M Consolidated, 11-0.

Their shutout of A&M Consolidated on Saturday went only three innings. Baylee Chandler and Reagan Williamson each hit a home run, and Jaylen Prichard got a double. Look for more about that game from Jerry Michalsky in this week’s paper.

Liberty’s two runs scored in their 2-1 victory over Huntington were courtesy of homers hit by Mikaelah Burkland and Alex Wiley. Pitcher Kaci West struck out seven Red Devils at the plate.
